Studying guitar must of course be both rewarding & fun. However it is vital that you plan your journey; that is, you establish what you actually want to learn & what you want to be able to do! But having a clear goal in place is only the start; you then need to plan steps that will help you achieve your goal!
I have been training & teaching Business Studies, ICT & Guitar, in university, college, schools, & both the private & public sectors since 1995 & I have learned a thing or two about setting clear aims & objectives, lesson plans etc that I want to pass onto you. Have a vision, then plan your steps...
Identify Your Aim
Aims could include:
- Learning to play the guitar
- Want to play a song
- To read & compose music
- To record a piece of music
- To play in a band
- To play for fun
So you must first identify YOUR Aim or Goal!
Next you need to set the objectives.
Identify Your Objectives
The objectives' include identifying what steps you must take to achieve your aim. Therefore an aim could have many objectives.

Learning beginner guitar is an amazing journey of discovery & a gift that you can share with others...
The guitar is a versatile instrument and can be used to play styles such as, Rock, Blues, Jazz, Funk, Reggae, Indie, Country, Fusion, Metal, classical, Finger Picking & many more too!
Many guitarists learning beginner guitar are self taught, but this often leads to times of frustration through a lack of understanding of theory & creative ideas in particular.
I have been on my guitar journey for over 35 years & therefore want to share a few tips with you that I believe will help you succeed a lot easier!
Here are tips that I use personally & want to pass on to you whilst learning beginner guitar.
TIP #1
Use the best quality guitar you can. The better the quality, the easier it will be to learn to play guitar, & the better guitars attract better prices when sold. Cheap guitars will not stay in-tune & will be so much harder to play chords on.
TIP # 2
Take your time through each lesson until you fully understand & can apply the material... it is a marathon not a sprint!
TIP # 3
Move on through each lesson slowly & you will succeed. I suggest that you don’t jump from lesson to lesson… This material is structured & built on previous lessons. It should take you at least a year to learn all of the material found on this web site.
TIP # 4
Study the theory, try the tests & practice the exercises with the backing tracks as often as you can.
TIP # 5
Vary your practice don't over do just one topic, & use headphones when using an amp, keep in with your family & you won't fall out!
TIP # 6
Start to play along with other musicians as soon as you can; share tips, techniques & knowledge.
TIP # 7
Get yourself an effects pedal & go through the effects pedal lessons found on this site.
TIP # 8
Keep a journal, see the journal link on this site... it is good to keep a record of learning & creative ideas... I have lost all too many great musical ideas in the past! I don't anymore...
TIP # 9
Have fun, don't take studies too seriously, & you will succeed!
