The 7 modes listed below all share the pitch of C. The study of Pitch Axis Theory involves picking chords that share a common note, (in this case they will all have a C note in them). That common note is not only found in the chord but is also played as a pedal tone by a bass player, organist or keyboard player. Then the lead guitarist will solo over each chord using the notes from the scale that the chord is drawn from. So it's all about selecting a scale or mode; then a chord then solo over it; stay with me I all will be revealed in this lesson...

Here are the 7 modes, we are going to study pitch axis theory from.
C Ionian Mode: C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C
C Dorian Mode: C, D, Eb, F, G, A, Bb, C
C Phrygian Mode: C, Db, Eb, F, G, Ab, Bb, C
C Lydian Mode: C, D, E, F#, G, A, B, C
C Mixolydian Mode: C, D, E, F, G, A, Bb, C
C Aeolian Mode: C, D, Eb, F, G, Ab, Bb, C
C Locrian Mode: C, Db, Eb, F, Gb, Ab, Bb, C
So pitch Axis Theory involves:
Scales & Modes that share a common note
Chords that share a common note
A pedal tone played continuously to lock in the pitch
What Is Pitch Axis Theory?
So here's what you should now know:
Pitch Axis Theory is a way of creating music by using chords that have a common note in them, let's say they will all have a C note in them. Each of the chords used will be formed from a scale or mode. Lead guitarists then play the scale that corresponds to the chord. This lesson will show you how to create amazing sounding pitch axis chord progressions all in C...
So we are going to use the pitch of C, so we will pick chords from the scales listed above that have a C note in them.
Pitch axis chord progressions are played over a pedal tone (a C note played on the bass guitar, organ or keyboard continuously), maintaining the C pitch.
Each scale allows us to create at least one unique chord, that when played the lead guitarist will solo over using the scale the chord is formed from.

C Ionian Mode (or C Major Scale)
C Ionian Mode is: C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C.
The unique chord we are going to use in the pitch axis chord progression from the Ionian Mode is CM7add11
This chord is made up from using: C, E, G, B, F.
C Dorian Mode
C Dorian Mode is: C, D, Eb, F, G, A, Bb, C.
The unique chord we are going to use in the pitch axis chord progression from the Dorian Mode is Cm6
This chord is made up from using: C, Eb, G, A.
C Phrygian Mode
C Phrygian Mode is: C, Db, Eb, F, G, Ab, Bb, C.
The unique chord we are going to use in the pitch axis chord progression from the Phrygian Mode is Cm7b9
This chord is made up from using: C, Eb, G, Bb, Db.
C Lydian Mode
C Lydian Mode is: C, D, E, F#, G, A, B, C.
The unique chord we are going to use in the pitch axis chord progression from the Lydian Mode is CMaj7add#11
This chord is made up from using: C, E, G, B, F#.
C Mixolydian Mode
C Mixolydian Mode is: C, D, E, F, G, A, Bb, C.
The unique chords we are going to choose from in the pitch axis chord progression from the Mixolydian Mode are Dom7, Dom9, Dom11
This chord is made up from using:
Dom7 - C, E, G, Bb.
Dom9 - C, E, G, Bb, D.
Dom11 - C, E, G, Bb, D, F.
C Aeolian Mode (or C Minor Scale)
C Aeolian Mode is: C, D, Eb, F, G, Ab, Bb, C.
The unique chords we are going to choose from in the pitch axis chord progression from the C Aeolian Mode are: Cm7addb13 or Cm11b13
Cm7addb13 - C, Eb, G, Bb, Ab.
Cm11b13 - C, Eb, G, Bb, D, F, Ab
C Locrian Mode
C Locrian Mode is: C, Db, Eb, F, Gb, Ab, Bb, C.
The unique chord we are going to use in the pitch axis chord progression from the Locrian Mode is Cm7b5
This chord is made up from using: C, Eb, Gb, Bb.
