How To Create C Phrygian Mode

The scale template used to create the phrygian mode from the chromatic scale is S/T, T, T, T, ST, T, T.

Where T is Tone the distance of two frets & S/T is a distance of 1 fret.

So this is how we find the notes in the C phrygian mode.

So we find that the C phrygian mode has: C, Db, Eb, F, G, Ab, Bb, C

Why Db not C# or Eb & not D# or Ab not G# or Bb & not A#?

Well, we must have at least one of each note in a scale or mode. Which means that we can not have C & C#, or Db & D# or G & G# or Ab & A#.

You notice that the notes on the guitar fretboard are colour co-ordinated. For me this is the best way that I have found to learn how to get to grips with the multiple duplicate notes.

For instance how many C notes can be found across the entire guitar fretboard?

Here’s the 7 diatonic triads for C Phrygian Mode:

Cm, Db, Eb, Fm, G dim, Ab, Bbm

Here’s the 7th chords drawn from the C Phrygian Mode:

Cm7, DbM7, Eb7, Fm7, Gm7b5, AbM7, Bbm7

Here’s the list of the 7 diatonic triads for C Phrygian Mode.

Db, Made up using - Db F Ab

Eb, Made up using - Eb G Bb

Fm, Made up using - F Ab C

Gdim, Made up using - Bb Db

Ab, Made up using - Ab C Eb

Bbm, Made up using - Bb Db F

Now notice that the Phrygian Mode has the following chord patterns:

(m M M m d M m).

Here’s a list of popular chord patterns used with the C Phrygian Mode.

Eb, Db, (Repeated play C Pedal Tone) – This mood will create tension, suspense!

Cm, Db, E,b Cm, (Spanish Feel)

Cm, Db,

Note: All of the above patterns are unique to the Phrygian Mode.

Phrygian Mode - The Bigger Picture

The bigger picture is that you have 7 notes in a C phrygian mode. You can build many chords from each note of the scale.

Let's put this into action. Let's take the C phrygian mode & find C shape chords that can be used in composition:

These 7 notes can make a host of chords as follows.

Let's just take the C note as the root note and add notes to it.
