C Melodic (Jazz) Minor Scale For Guitar

Melodic Minor Scale

C Melodic (Jazz) Minor Chord Structure

C Melodic Jazz Minor Scale: C D Eb F G A B C

You notice that the notes on the guitar fretboard are colour co-ordinated. For me this is the best way that I have found to learn how to get to grips with the multiple duplicate notes.

For instance how many C notes can be found across the entire guitar fretboard?

Once you have learnt this guitar scale click on the lead guitar backing track link to practise.

The C Melodic Jazz Minor Mode is the same as the Ionian Mode except the Eb. This one note however makes a massive difference to both the chords used & the sound created as it’s the 3rd note that shapes the chord as a major or minor chord. Have a look at the chords available to you when soloing with the Melodic Jazz Minor Mode & compare the chords with the other Minor Modes below.

Significant chord differences are:

Ebaug, EbM7#5, G, G7, Bdim & Bm7b5.

The Jazz Minor Mode is as it’s name implies very popular in Jazz music. The Jazz Minor Scale or Mode has 7 Modes that are used in Jazz, they are:

(1) Jazz Minor, (2) Dorian b2, (3) Lydian #5, (4) Lydian b7,
(5) Mixolydian b6, (6) Locrian Natural 2 (7) Altered Mode.

Alternative Chord progressions with the C Melodic Jazz Minor Mode are as follows:

Because this Mode makes use of the B natural note we have the added jazz feel created through using chord tensions based upon the CmM7 structure such as CmM9, CmM11, & CmM13…

Record or have someone play the following chord progression as you solo with the C Melodic Jazz Minor Mode. As a suggestion count 1 2 3 4 & play a down stroke on each beat… you’ll soon feel the jazz.

Start soloing over just the CmM7 chord first so you get to hear & feel the jazz... Now try:

CmM7 Am7b5 Dm7 G7b13

Now that sounds Jazzy!

Rock musicians are using the melodic & harmonic minor modes to add a new dimension to their music... & in truth it will really open wide your door to creativity when you get to grips with these chords.

Now check out the chord progressions available to you.
