Style Sheet #2 Blues

  1. Instrumentation – Drums, electric Bass guitar, double bass, piano, organ, electric Rhythm guitar will play major, 6th & 7th chords. Hammond organs are popular, often used instead of a second guitar. Lead guitar with overdrive & reverb to suit the type of blues you are playing.

  2. Rhythms – Triplets, 123, 223, 323, 423 etc.

  3. Scales – Major & Minor Pentatonic, Blues, Aeolian, Dorian, Mixolydian, Whole Tone.

  4. Chords – Chords are usually basic shapes; 7th, or 9th, Sus 2, Sus 4 chords are popular, also playing a pattern using the major chord, the 6th & the 7th chords.

  5. Technique – Rhythm guitar play major, 6th & 7th chords, lead guitar will use plenty of bends. Bottle neck is used as a slide technique and often open chord tuning in the Key of G or D are popular.

  6. Effects – Slight Overdrive, Reverb or echo, Wah Wah.

  7. Sound & Tone – Experiment with both a bright tone that will cut through the other instruments using the bridge pickup then try a deeper sound using the neck pick up.

  8. Amplification – Valve amplifiers such as Fender, Marshall & Mesa Boogie are very common, offering rich sound, reverb and overdrive built in.

C Blues Exercise

The Blues sound is created using a flat 7th note.

Although there are many scales available when playing the Blues... try the following scales & modes over the backing track & you'll soon be playing Blues lead guitar.

Notice how all but one of these modes & scales have the flat 7th note in common.

The C Major Pentatonic Scale create a country Blues feels similar to the C Mixolydian.

I suggest that you play through the modes & scales until you can feel the Blues in each of them.

Enjoy...
