Getting to grips with guitar tab will seriously unlock both your rhythm & lead guitar skills...

For many beginner guitarists' the process of learning guitar tabs can be daunting!

Often because it's hard work & for many guitarists reading guitar tab is not viewed as, that important!

Learning to read & use guitar tablature is not to be feared, it is just a system that will help you both create & play music. Guitar tab is not unique to guitar, it has been written for hundreds of years.

Some guitar tab are written with the stave on top of it, where the stave sets out the rhythm (the length of each note played). This is very useful as you then have best of both, that is you have music notation & you have the guitar tab!

If guitar tab does not use music notation, then you will have to rely on hearing or knowing the rhythm of the piece of music.

With guitar lessons for beginners you have a chance to make a start in learning, playing & writing guitar tab & I know you'll be glad you did.

Music Notation or Guitar Tab

Music notation as previously discussed is capable of conveying the length of each note but does note help you with the position each note should be played on the guitar. Unlike a piano, that has set notes in set places & are easily identified from music notation, some notes on the guitar can be played in one of few places. The ideal is to find music that includes both music notation & guitar tab.

So you will be best to think of guitar tab as music shorthand when not accompanied with music notation.

In addition to the frets used there are a number of symbols that help you to best play the guitar notes.

Common symbols include: Along with the numbers & lines, guitar tab uses symbols to indicate the option to use a technique such as; hammer on, pull off, slide up, slide down, vibrato or tapping.

So here's your opportunity to study & use the common lead guitar techniques.

Hammer On Technique

Symbol Name: Hammer On

Symbol h

Description: The hammer on technique is commonly used in guitar tab & is placed between 2 numbers on the same string.

So for instance, 12h15 would be represented as follows:

-----------|
--12h15----|
-----------|
-----------|
-----------|
-----------|
The above example would mean that you fret & strike the 2nd string 12th fret, (I would use my first finger) then press down your 3rd or 4th finger onto the 15th fret without striking the note.

Practice:

Try this exercise using the following notes from the C ionian mode.

-------------------------------10h12--| You play D to E
--12h15-------------------------------| You play B to D
---------5h7--------------------------| You play C to D
---------------5h7--------------------| You play G to A
---------------------7h8--------------| You play E to F
--------------------------5h8---------| You play A to C

Pull Off Technique

Symbol Name: Pull Off

Symbol p

Description: The pull off technique is commonly used with the hammer on in guitar tab & is placed between 2 numbers on the same string.

So for instance, 15p12 would be represented as follows:

---------|
--15h12--|
---------|
---------|
---------|
---------|
The above example would mean that you fret & strike the 2nd string 15th fret, then release to the 12th fret without striking the note.

Practice:

Try this exercise using the following notes from the C ionian mode.

-------------------------------12p10--| You play E to D
--15p12-------------------------------| You play D to B
---------7p5--------------------------| You play D to C
---------------7p5--------------------| You play A to G
---------------------8p7--------------| You play F to E
--------------------------8p5---------| You play C to A

You may find the ^ symbol used in guitar tab; which represents either hammer on or pull off.

Hammer On or Pull Off Technique

Symbol Name: Hammer On or Pull Off

Symbol ^

Description: Use this one symbol to either hammer on or pull off. You simply follow the numbers.

So for instance, 12^15 would use hammer on.

So for instance, 15^12 would use pull off.

---------|
--15^12--|
---------|
---------|
---------|
---------|
The above example would mean that you fret & strike the 2nd string 15th fret, then release to the 12th fret without striking the note.

Practice:

Try this exercise using the following notes from the C ionian mode.

-------------------------------12^10--| You play E to D
--15^12-------------------------------| You play D to B
---------7^5--------------------------| You play D to C
---------------7^5--------------------| You play A to G
---------------------8^7--------------| You play F to E
--------------------------8^5---------| You play C to A
