Guitar Strings

The strings are fed through the top nut & into the machine heads and tightened up. The machine heads are used to tune the guitar by either tightening or loosening the string.

Top Nut

The strings are fed onto the top nut just before they are fed into the machine heads. The top nut is white plastic glued onto the top of the guitar neck & has 6 groves of different thicknesses to hold each string securely between the neck & the machine heads.

Machine Head

Machine heads are found on every guitar & are used to hold the string tight & to tune the guitar. It is important to note that when feeding the string into the machine head for the first time that you keep the string as tight as you can & avoid having slack as you wind the string around the machine head, as this will help keep the string in tune; as strings that have slack detune often.

Choosing A Set Of Strings

Choosing a set of strings is an important part of guitar lessons for beginners as the choice of strings can help your guitar playing & the sound.

Strings help create the sound, the thickness of the strings are important too. Acoustic guitars will use a heavier gauge like 12 or 13 (this is the size of the first string) this will mean that the guitar will stay in tune well but the heavier the string gauge the more strain placed on the guitar neck. If you want to play both rhythm & leaf guitar on an acoustic guitar then you may want to try gauge 10 or 11.

Electric guitars use lighter strings where lead guitar work could use 9, a light gauge, or 10 for rhythms.

When you purchase strings for your guitar make sure you state what guitar you have that is acoustic or electric & what gauge you want. It is best to try different makes & gauges until you find what's best for you & your sound.

Changing Strings

Changing guitar strings is a job you can do. How often you change your guitar strings depends on how often you play your guitar & in what environment. Strings & the fretboard should be wiped after every use; you can buy suitable cloths in any good guitar shops. Strings will last longer if you look after them. You will know when you need to replace your strings when the tone fails that is when you pluck the string the sound fades too soon, this will result in the guitar sounding out of tune & often will mean that you will not be able to tune the guitar. Secondly strings are metal & the rust not goods for your fingers!

If you follow the advice then you will get many months of use out of your guitar strings.
