Musical Notes

Musical notes form the language that we musicians use to communicate with each other & our audiences... It doesn't matter where we live, what languages we speak... as long as we all learn to speak the language of music!

So as you have come to study "guitar music theory" with "guitar lessons for beginners" & to learn to play guitar; you will greatly benefit from this new language... the language of music.

So how do we begin to learn the language of guitar music theory...

Click on the link below to continue your study on musical notes.

The Chromatic Scale

The chromatic Scale has all of the 12 different notes found in western music. The structure of the Chromatic scale is based on the following fundamentals:

There are 12 different sounding notes in the chromatic scale. The notes are formed using the first 7 letters of the English alphabet:

A, B, C, D, E, F, G

5 of the 7 notes have sharps & flats, 2 of the 7 notes don’t have a sharp; B & E which also means that there is no Cb or Fb.

Therefore the A Chromatic Scale has the following 12 notes:

A (A# Or Bb) B C (C# Or Db) D (D# Or Eb) E F (F# or Gb) G (G# Or Ab)

Scales

Scales are a set of unique related notes drawn together using a scale template. Scales are made from matching a scale template to the chromatic scale, (all scales have a scale template & they are all drawn from the chromatic scale).

Therefore each Scale produces a unique set of notes that are used to create musical items. These related notes are used to create vocal lines, lead riffs, instrumentals, & of course the chords used in the musical item. So click on the links below to get to grips with scales, scale templates & the chords created from them...

Guitar Fretboard Diagram

The guitar fretboard follows the notes from the chromatic scale, where each fret produces a note. Having a command of the fretboard sets you in the top few percent of guitarists' around the world!

For instance, how many guitarists' do you know that know all of the notes on the guitar fretboard & their relationships?

Some guitarists' get by through learning chord shapes only; they don't know what notes make up the chords they play & they don't know what notes make up the scales they have to work with!

This is not good for two reasons.

Firstly, they are unable to communicate effectively with the music community; secondly they are extremely limited when it comes to composition. So by knowing the notes on the entire fretboard, you will be able to play scales & chords more effectively, create musical items quickly, efficiently & gain a greater respect amongst fellow musicians...

So follow the link below & become a master the guitar fretboard

Music Notation

Music Notation is the language that we musicians communicate with. It offers all that we need to know; the key, the rhythm, the tempo, the chords, the notes, their length... basically in music notation we have it all. If you can read music notation you will be able to play a musical item without ever having heard it!

Music notation is written for all instruments & singers, but often guitar players tend you use guitar tablature (tab) instead. The most effective option is when music notation is accompanied with guitar tab. That's what I like & that's what I want to help you get to grips with.

There are five reasons why I believe that you will benefit from learning to read music notation; click on the link below to discover what they are & a lot more besides.

Guitar Tabs

Guitar tab is guitar music. Guitar tab are numbers written on 6 horizontal lines.

Guitar tab is used to write lead guitar riffs, lead breaks, chords & arpeggios.

Here’s an example of a G Major chord as guitar tab.

3--
0--
0--
0--
2--
3--

The top line represents the first string & number 3 means you play fret 3 on the 1st string.

The 0 means that you play the string open (not fretted). So string 2, 3, & 4 are played open.

String 5 you fret at the 2nd fret.

Finally, the bottom line is string 6 & you hold down the 3rd fret.

Notice how all numbers are stacked vertically, this means that you play vertical notes at the same time.

Here's the G major chord played as an arpeggio.

-----------------3--
--------------0-----
-----------0--------
--------0-----------
-----2--------------
--3-----------------

Here's an example of a lead riff in G Major.

-------------------2--3-----
----------------0-----------
--------------0-------------
--------0--2----------------
-----2----------------------
0--3---------------------3--
