12 Essential Guitar Fretboard Scales
So here's an overview of the scales that you can learn with guitar lessons for beginners:
Chromatic scale: The chromatic scale for guitar is not listed as one of the 12 essential scales as the chromatic scale has all 12 notes found in western contemporary music & is used to form all other scales. So getting to grips with the chromatic scale is essential as you will use it 12 times to form the other scales using 12 unique scale templates.
Ionian mode: Most popular scale also known as the major scale. Used in Jazz, Country & Pop music.
Dorian mode: A minor bluesy or latin feel, get down to some great bluesy chords & lead breaks as you study & use the online Blues backing tracks from guitar lessons for beginners.
Phrygian mode: Want to create tension or suspense? This dark sounding scale will do the job; feel the tension whilst using the backing tracks... it will amaze you!
Lydian mode: Do you like Reggae? This is the one you want to get to grips with... also great with Jazz! This scale is the major scale but with a raised 4th note.
Mixolydian mode: A major bluesy feel, get down to some great bluesy chords & lead breaks as you study & use the online Blues backing tracks from guitar lessons for beginners.
Aeolian mode: This is also known as the minor scale... this is the one you want to stir the emotions towards tears, sadness lament... feel it in the backing tracks.
Locrian mode: This is based on a diminished chord or the minor 7 flat 5 chord & is used a lot in Jazz Fusion (a mixture of Jazz & Rock, sound really good once you get into it!).
Harmonic minor scale: This is an excellent addition to your guitar fretboard toolkit... This scale sounds exotic & adds some useful chords too!
The harmonic minor scale is used in Jazz music & once you add this one into your composition & lead guitar solo's you will seriously turn some heads, with the wow factor!
The harmonic minor guitar fretboard scale is best used sparingly though; to take your song, the chords, vocals or lead guitar solo's up a number of gears then bring the music back down again.
The wow factor is created using the combination of a major 7th note a flat 6th & a flat 3rd.
Melodic (jazz) minor scale: This scale is also used in Jazz music and again you will want to use this to add that little bit extra to your music, then move onto another scale.
This scale is unique as it uses a major 7th with a 6th & a flat 3rd!
Major Pentatonic scale: This scale is drawn from the related notes found in the ionian, lydian & mixolydian modes.
The major pentatonic scale has only 5 notes, (all 5 notes can be found in the three scales above. So this means that you can use this scale to solo over any of the chords found in the ionian, lydian & mixolydian modes.
The major pentatonic scale is very widely used as the 5 note scale leaves little margin for error!
You can use the major pentatonic scale to create upbeat or happy sounding lead breaks.
This scale is often used by Rock, Blues, Pop, Jazz, & particularly Country musicians.
Minor Pentatonic scale: This scale is drawn from the related notes found in the aeolian, dorian & phrygian modes.
The minor pentatonic scale has only 5 notes, (all 5 notes can be found in the three scales above. So this means that you can use this scale to solo over any of the chords found in the aeolian, dorian & phrygian modes.
The minor pentatonic scale is very widely used as the 5 note scale leaves little margin for error!

Why Are All Scales In C?
This is an added bonus for you, as you will now be able to compare each of the scales with the C major Scale & learn the intervals... such as the lydian is the same as the major scale except for a raised 4th note or the mixolydian mode is the same as the major scale but for a flat 7th... but as you will soon discover just having one note different totally changes the sound, the chords, the feel of your music...
Finally, by studying each scale in C you will be able to participate in the advanced study of pitch axis & remember all of the scales are moveable, so that means once you have learned all 12 scales in C you will be able to play those 12 scales in any key simply by starting the scale in a different position of the guitar fretboard! So the C major scale will start on the C note on the 8th fret of the 6th string, so to play the D major scale you use the same 7 major scale patterns, but you start them on the 10th fret 6th string (a D note. Foe a G major scale you start on the 3rd fret or 15th fret.
