Learning to master the guitar fretboard has to be a long-term commitment; but once you know the notes, all over the guitar fretboard or guitar neck, your rhythm & lead guitar play will greatly improve!

Over the years, studying the guitar fretboard has been viewed by many as a barrier too-far; but those very same people are now the ones struggling in their creativity!
Who needs to learn the
guitar fretboard?
Well all who want to be taken seriously in the music world! By "learning the guitar fretboard" on a regular basis you will unlock your true potential... which will mark you as a serious contender amongst serious guitarists!
So learning the "guitar fretboard" will introduce you to the 22 notes found on each string of an "electric guitar" & that there are over 130 possible places to sound a note on the "electric guitar fretboard". Although there are over 130 frets to play a note there are only 12 different types of notes, which are collectively known as an octave e.g. (E through to E).
When studying the "guitar fretboard diagram" you will play each of the 12 notes in turn from the open string to the last fret on that string, making sure that you practice naming both the flat (b) & the sharp notes (#). Please note that B & E notes do not have a sharp note & that C & F do not have flat notes.
So with this information the notes range covers almost four octaves. The lowest note being an E and the highest note (unbent) is a D. Guitarist’s can bend the first string 22nd fret the equivalent of two frets and sound an E note 4 octaves higher than the 6th string.
Therefore, the electric guitar offers you the chance to play notes spanning 4 octaves.
If you plan to develop your lead guitar knowledge & skills you will have to learn to use all of the 130 plus different places to play your lead breaks; this is achieved through "learning the guitar fretboard". Rhythm guitarists’ however use a much smaller amount of the frets to play notes or chords.
So where does the 12 different notes come from?

Tips When Learning To Master The Guitar Fretboard
You will want to know that there are 12 notes in the octave & that notes B & E do not show sharp notes (#) & C & F do not show flats (b).
So the notes on the 6th & 1st strings are as follows:

A great way to learn to master the guitar fretboard is to identify all E notes on the guitar fretboard, then use this process to learn all the notes in turn.
I suggest that you find all E notes up to the 5th fret over the 6 strings. Then all of the F notes etc. Once you have master the notes over 6 strings up to the 5th fret then learn to notes up to the 9th fret. Then learn the notes on all 6 strings up to the 12th fret. Finally, learn all the notes over the entire guitar fretboard.
Tips Map The Notes Across The Guitar Fretboard
Once you have the notes on all strings identified up to the 12th fret it is time to map the notes on the guitar fretboard.
This involves looking at the guitar fretbord in two ways.
- Identify all of the notes over the entire fretboard
- Identify scale patterns on the entire guitar fretboard
