The sound signal picked up via the pickups, pass through the volume & tone controls before it moves to an amplifier via the guitar socket.
Most tone controls are a combination of a potentiometer (the earthed pot) & a capacitor (this filters the treble signal as it is earthed to the pot). So they tap off the high or treble frequencies & sends them to the earth, so the lower the tone is set the lower the treble signal sent to the amplifier. When the tone is turned full on, maximum treble (the full signal from the pickup) is is sent to the amplifier. As the tone control is turned towards the off position the capacitor sends the treble signal to the pot, which deepens the tone.
The tone controls are used to help create your sound.
For playing Jazz, select a deeper tone around 3 from 10 on the tone control. Then select the neck pickup (the pickup closest to the guitar neck) as this offers a deeper tone.
For playing Blues, use the tone controls at number 5 of 10. Then select the neck pickup (the pickup closest to the guitar neck) as this offers a deeper tone.
For a cutting lead guitar tone set the tone control to 10 from 10. Then select the bridge pickup (the pickup closest to the guitar bridge) as this offers a brighter tone.
For a warm or mellow lead guitar tone set the tone control to 6 from 10. Then select the bridge pickup (the pickup closest to the guitar bridge) as this offers a brighter tone which will help to cut through the other instruments but still offer a warm tone.
