There are many types of guitar amplifiers available to you, each offering something unique. The types include:
Tube (Valve amplifiers)
These are my preferred choice. I use a Marshall JCM 2000 they have outstanding tone & range. Here there are 3 guitar amps in one, I have a clean, crunch & lead sound. The channels are selected through a pedal switch that selects any of the three amps & turns on/off the reverb unit. Tube guitar amps are warm & rich in sound offering a strong bottom end (deep bass sound) at all levels. They are powerful, but heavy, but will give that big sound, great for Rock, Blues & Jazz music. Tube amplifiers come as combo's (amps plus built in speakers) plus the option to use extension speakers or Head & Cabinets.
The choice is again down to what sound you are looking for & what best suits your reality. If you are going to play smaller venues then the Combo guitar amp could be ideal. If you play without a microphone in a large venue then the stack could be best option.
Solid State Amplifiers
Solid state guitar amplifiers are a cheaper option than tube amplifiers and many would say that the solid state circuitry can produce a superior clean power than tube amplifiers.
Many manufacturers are actually making hybrid amplifiers that use the best of both...
That said serious guitar pro's tend to go for tube amplifiers.
Guitar Amp modelling
This offers the best of all worlds where you can buy a small practice amp that will have on-board guitar modelling, where at a click of a switch you can move from a all out rock lead breaks to a soft chorus, delay, reverb sound for flat picking.
Again the price is particularly reasonable & they can be tweaked to your liking & used in the recording studio.
Speakers
Smaller speakers (10") offer higher frequencies than larger speakers (15").
An open-backed cabinet will sound different to a closed back cabinet. For Blues an open back 4x10 Fender amp is often preferred, offering a smooth tone.
Whereas for Rock a Marshall with a dual 4x12 cabinet design could be the best option.
