Chromatic Scale For Guitar From Music Maker Guitar Lessons
Study the Chromatic Scale for Guitar
Scales & Modes are drawn from the chromatic scale. So let’s look at the chromatic scale for guitar first. The chromatic scale has all of the 12 different notes found in western music. The structure of the chromatic scale is based on the following fundamentals:
There are 12 different sounding notes in the chromatic scale. The notes are made up of using the first 7 letters of the English alphabet:
A, B, C, D, E, F, G
Along with the 7 natural notes as shown above, the chromatic scale is completed by adding 5 more notes, which are read as either a sharp or a flat note.
These sharp or flat notes are known as enharmonic notes; which means that the note can be known as a sharp note (#) or a flat note (b).
Within the guitar lessons provided by guitar lessons for beginners you will learn when to read the note as a sharp note & when to apply a flat note...
Chromatic Scale For Guitar
To help understand how the chromatic scale is set up lets look at the notes found on a piano. There are 12 notes, 7 white keys (the 7 natural notes A through to G & 5 black keys (the sharp or a flat note, or enharmonic notes).
The piano, groups the black keys into a group of 2 black keys C# or Db & D# or Eb & a group of 3 black notes F# or Gb, G# or Ab & A# or Bb.
All pianos have the same structure, that is; all white keys are at the front & the 2 groups of black keys in the back!
Using the structure used on the piano it makes it possible for pianists to identify the notes on a keyboard easily, this however leaves us with the task of finding out the notes on a guitar fretboard!
So therefore you know that a chromatic scale has:
12 notes
7 natural notes
5 sharp or flat notes
5 of the 7 notes have sharps or flats
2 of the 7 notes don’t have a sharp; B & E
2 of the 7 notes don’t have a flat, C & F
So here's the full chromatic scale starting on an A note:

Notice the 5 notes that can either be identified as a sharp or a flat.
A# or Bb, C# or Db, F# or Gb, G# or Ab.
It is important to know when to use a sharp & when to use a flat.
There is a very easy rule to remember when creating a Scale:
You simply make sure that you have 1 of each of the letters of the alphabet in every 7 note scale.
